The Appalachian Mountains in North Carolina holds some of the most important roots to early Bluegrass, Gospel and Country Music. Spruce Pine is especially rich in music history and once was the home to The Carolina Barn Dance. This small musical program, which was originally in The Carolina Theatre on what locals call “Lower Street”, was picked up in 1950 by Liberty Broadcasting. It was broadcast to more than 500 stations across the United States. Talented musicians such as Chet Atkins, Patsy Cline, Jimmy Dickens, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys, Hank Snow, Scotty and Lulu Bell Wiseman, and Fiddlin’ Red Wilson all performed here.
