Hump Mountain, accessible by the Roan Mountain portion of the Appalachian Trail, made the top 7 list on Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine’s 7 of the Best Sunset Summits in Western North Carolina. Hump Mountain features a breathtaking 360-degree all-inclusive view of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Hump Mountain is located at Roan Mountain, which is home to some of the best hiking trails in North Carolina, including a portion of the Appalachian Trail. These trails range in difficulty and length, and there is a trail to suite every hikers needs, young or old.
Bear Den Overlook – Blue Ridge Parkway, NC
Just a short drive from Spruce Pine is the Bear Den Overlook, one of the highest peaks to view an evening sunset. At an elevation of 3360 feet, this overlook boasts a 180-degree view over miles of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the contrast of the colorful evening sky. Sunsets on the Blue Ridge Parkway are unforgettable, and this spot will be well worth the short drive. You’ll find Bear Den Overlook at Milepost 323, heading North from Spruce Pine on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The Loops Overlook – Blue Ridge Parkway, NC
It’s not uncommon to see folks pulled over at The Loops Overlook to take in the view and a sunset. This is the ideal spot for taking a blanket and watching the sun fade into the mountains as the sky turns many shades of orange. Located at Milepost 328.6 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, this overlook gives you a beautiful view of the Altapass Apple Orchard and the mountains and greenery that surround it. At an elevation of 2980’, this peak view of Western North Carolina will exceed all expectations.
Restaurants in Little Switzerland – Little Switzerland, NC
Little Switzerland, named after its likeness to the Swiss Alps, provides several lesser known spots for your sunrise and sunset excursions. If you want a dinner with a view of the sunset, Mountain View Restaurant and the Switzerland Inn are the best places to see it! Mountain Inns like the Alpine Inn and Skyline Village Inn provide a peaceful spot to take in the views and the sunsets. Little Switzerland is located right on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 334. While there, you can also take in a meal at one of the area restaurants, shop in unique galleries and village shops and even visit a real mine once mine by Tiffany’s Jewelers.
Black Mountains Overlook- Blue Ridge Parkway
This large pull off has a stunning panorama view of the towering Black Mountains on the not-so-distant horizon. In it’s view just a little north of southwest, it has one of longest viewing periods for sunsets of any overlook on the Parkway. Head south on the Blue Ridge Parkway from Spruce Pine (MP331) to Milepost 342.2
